Our Mission
Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center's mission is to provide public awareness, education, and enjoyment of the visual arts by promoting the works of Michigan artists.
We have the vision of enhancing the quality of life and cultural well being of the community, the Gallery provides a permanent cultural facility and outreach initiatives to fulfill its mission.
We ensure that exhibits, educational programs and opportunities to purchase Michigan art are always available to the public.
How We Engage
Serving as one of Michigan’s key cultural resources, Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center inspires and ignites passion for the visual arts, providing a forum for self-expression and community engagement.
As a non-profit organization, we offer free and accessible opportunities to experience the visual arts through exhibitions, educational programming, and a gallery featuring Michigan artists.
We have provided more than 500 free art exhibitions and granted over $110,000 in awards for students. We are building a legacy through engaging programs, a permanent cultural facility, and public art projects outside the gallery walls.
Our History
Representing Michigan Artists since 1965, in a progressive move to provide Michigan’s capital city with a showplace for original art forms, a handful of dedicated artists joined forces in the fall of 1965 and created the Lansing Community Art Gallery, later shortened to the Lansing Art Gallery. Lansing Art Gallery became incorporated shortly thereafter.
The cooperative efforts of these hard-working artists and art educators gave the City of Lansing its first permanent art gallery. Within a year and a half, the number of participating artists had risen from the original six to well over one hundred, and visiting patrons filled the Gallery to capacity at its monthly receptions.

Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center
Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center is located in the Knapp's Building. The entrance to the gallery is located on the north side of the building, on W. Washtenaw Street.
Wheelchair access is available on the first floor. For 2nd floor access, use the next available eastern entrance where you can find elevators to the 2nd floor. Please call our main phone number for assistance and for a guided tour of our facilities and rest areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an admission cost to enter the gallery?
No, the Gallery has free admission and is open to the public. However, we do accept all monetary and in-kind donations at the gallery and online.
Is the Gallery & Education Center a non-profit organization?
The Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center is a 501(c03 non-profit organization. Your donations are tax deductible under the guidelines for donating to a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Are parking and entrances ADA Accessible?
Metered street parking is available directly in front of the gallery, as well as throughout the downtown Lansing area however, there are no designated handicap street parking. The metered parking is free on the weekends. Additionally, there is public lot parking available across the street of our main entrance. Public parking ramps are also available nearby.
For wheelchair access to our mezzanine level, please use the Knapps Building main entrance, just East of the gallery entrance. Elevators to the 2nd floor are located in the back of the main lobby in the hall behind the staircase.

What is the nearest bus stop location?
CATA has three bus stops within a short walking distance to the gallery. These ADA compliant stops are:
- Ottawa just past N. Capital Ave, the bus lines are 1, 3, 8, 13, 46, 48
- SBD Washington past Michigan Ave
- Grand Ave past E. Michigan Ave, the bus lines are 1, 3, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 46, 48
Are there things to do and see with children?
Children are always welcome at Lansing Art Gallery & Education Center. In addition to the main Gallery Exhibitions, we also have a student art galleries and an artistic hands-on Education Center where we offer activities for children and adults on a regular basis. You can also find gifts and other fun activities for children in our retail space.
Please call us in advance if you have concerns over whether current exhibitions contain adults content not suitable for children or minors.
Does the gallery offer art appraisals?
